A Growing Guide for Button, Shiitake, King Oyster, and Enoki Mushrooms
Button mushrooms, shiitake, king oyster mushrooms, and enoki mushrooms are all widely cultivated, but they do not thrive under the same conditions.
Each variety has different requirements for temperature, humidity, lighting, fresh air, and CO₂ concentration. Using one set of climate parameters for every mushroom can lead to slow growth, poor shape, inconsistent quality, and lower yields.
Understanding the ideal growing environment for each variety is therefore essential for stable commercial production.

Fruiting Temperature
Temperature plays an important role in mushroom development, fruiting speed, shape, and quality.
Typical fruiting temperature ranges are:
- Button mushroom: 15–18°C
- Shiitake: 15–20°C
- King oyster mushroom: 12–18°C
- Enoki mushroom: 8–12°C
Shiitake often benefits from a suitable temperature difference to stimulate fruiting. Enoki requires the lowest temperature of the four and is especially sensitive to excessive heat.
For this reason, cooling capacity and temperature control should be designed according to the mushroom variety, growing-room size, production load, and local climate.
Humidity Requirements
During the fruiting stage, all four varieties generally require relative humidity above 85%.
Button mushrooms and king oyster mushrooms are particularly sensitive to dry conditions. If humidity is too low, mushroom growth may slow down, caps may crack, and product quality may decline.
However, high humidity must be combined with proper air circulation. Excessive moisture and poor airflow can cause condensation and create uneven conditions inside the growing room.
Effective humidity control should therefore work together with ventilation and air circulation.
Lighting Requirements
Lighting needs also vary between mushroom varieties.
Button mushrooms and enoki mushrooms are usually grown under low-light or dark conditions, helping them maintain their typical color and appearance.
Shiitake and king oyster mushrooms require suitable diffused light during fruiting. Insufficient light may affect cap development, stem shape, and overall appearance.
Lighting intensity and operating time should be adjusted according to the mushroom variety and cultivation stage.

CO₂ Concentration and Fresh-Air Control
CO₂ concentration has a major influence on mushroom shape and development.
Enoki mushrooms can tolerate relatively high CO₂ levels. In controlled cultivation, higher CO₂ concentrations may be used to encourage longer stems and smaller caps.
Button mushrooms, shiitake, and king oyster mushrooms generally require more fresh-air exchange during fruiting. Excessive CO₂ may result in elongated stems, weak caps, deformation, or uneven growth.
Button mushrooms are especially sensitive to poor ventilation, making CO₂ monitoring and fresh-air control important for consistent product quality.

One Climate Setting Does Not Fit All Mushrooms
There is no universal climate setting for every mushroom variety.
Stable production depends on accurate control of:
- Temperature
- Relative humidity
- Fresh-air volume
- CO₂ concentration
- Air circulation
- Lighting
The ideal settings should be adjusted according to the mushroom variety, cultivation stage, growing-room design, production density, and local outdoor climate.
The KINGFIT All-in-One Mushroom Climate Control System integrates cooling, heating, humidification, fresh-air ventilation, CO₂ management, lighting control, and intelligent monitoring into one system.
With flexible PLC programming, growers can create different climate programs for different mushroom varieties and cultivation stages.

Precise environmental control helps mushroom farms achieve more stable yields, consistent quality, and repeatable production results.
